The Pinal County Public Health Services District is issuing a Smoke Advisory for portions of Casa Grande area that are affected by smoke from a hay fire in the area. The fire is within the city limits of Casa Grande and fire crews have been on scene since last evening. The fire is near Overfield Road, north of Highway 287. Even small hay fires can burn over a period of days.
People residing in these areas are urged to take appropriate precautions by limiting outdoor activity due to the diminished air quality. Due to Arizona ’s weather dynamics, temperature and terrain, smoke from fires tends to sink closer to the ground in the early morning hours and then rises, dissipating over a larger area as the temperatures increase. Health risks are increased due to extended exposure to smoke.
Typical symptoms related to short-term exposure to smoke may include itchy eyes, cough and upper airway irritation. Other potential health effects may include headache, dizziness and nausea. People with pre-existing conditions such as asthma or other respiratory problems should avoid exposure to smoke and stay in an air-conditioned environment.
Pinal County Public Health officials urge people to take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and their families. A particulate monitor is being placed the area to collect air quality data.
Those who choose to stay close to their property should take the following actions:
1. Stay indoors.
2. Close doors and windows.
3. Avoid the use of evaporative coolers.
