US 60 Gonzales Pass Roadway Improvement Project Update

This is a continuation in a series of construction alerts issued throughout the US 60 Gonzales Pass Roadway Improvement Project. The project begins approx. 1 mile east of the intersection of US 60 & SR79 at Florence Junction and extends east to just beyond the Queen Creek Bridge. Roadway improvements on this 10 mile portion of scenic highway through the Tonto National Forest will include: existing roadway widening, new roadway sections, drainage features, bridge structures, guard rail, fencing, paving, salvaging & replanting cacti, & other work.

Motorists are advised to obey all posted speed limit signs within the construction area & be alert for construction crews & personnel working in the area. Impacts to the traveling public are minimal.

Construction is ahead of schedule. Project completion originally planned for August 2009 now estimated to be early Spring 2009.

DELAYS & CLOSURES: Temporary delays & lane closures may occur during this phase of the improvement project. Motorists should anticipate intermittent slowing. Flagmen will be on site to help direct traffic through the area. Speed limits may be reduced.

PHASE 1:

* Crews are working to widen US 60 between mile post (MP) 218 to MP 222.

* Roadway blasting has been completed for this phase of the project but excavation continues. Equipment may need to cross the existing roadway so please be aware of flagmen directing traffic.

* Construction of the Reymert Wash Bridge is under way.

* Paving on the newly constructed roadway section has begun & will be followed by the application of roadway stripes & installation of guardrail.

* Phase I work is anticipated to be completed mid March at which time east & west bound traffic will be switched to the newly constructed roadway section. Reconstruction of the existing roadway will begin after the traffic has been switched.

* Cactus relocation along the new roadway will begin in May.

For your safety, and the safety of our construction crews, ADOT asks that you please reduce your speed through the construction zone.
