The Southern Gila County Economic Development Corporation (SGCEDC) voted unanimously at their regular meeting Thursday to support the Gila County Tool Lending Library. The SGCEDC has been granted 501(c) 3 not-for-profit status by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service & will encompass the tool lending library with that designation. The 501(c) 3 signature allows the tool lending library to apply for grants & programs that may otherwise be unavailable, as well as give tax receipts to individuals that donate money or tools to the program.
What is a tool lending library (TLL)? Thea Wilshire, originator & promoter of the idea, explains that a TLL works just like a traditional book library, but with their library card, patrons can check out power tools or ladders or other equipment they need to repair & beautify their homes & businesses. There's no cost to the program unless the tools are returned late. Late fees are then used to buy replacement saw blades & other parts to maintain the tools properly.
When the TLL opens, the community will earn the distinction of having the first community-wide TLL in Arizona. While other large cities have TLLs sponsored by their city governments (like Seattle, Portland, & San Francisco), Gila County is unique in the partnerships that make the program work. The TLL will be tracked through the Gila County Library System, supported by the SGCEDC for liability & tax purposes, & located at the Globe Senior Center. The TLL will be staffed by knowledgeable senior volunteers. Community organizations have already pledged support or given material for the TLL. Liberty High School donated 2 sturdily built sheds that the County Public Works helped to move to the Globe Senior Center. In addition, the Globe City Manager has pledged the purchase of new tools for the TLL.
